One afternoon - College Canteen

Was hunting around for old college snaps the other day. Somehow the images in my head blur into runny water colour pictures anytime I focus on them. But a few stand out with remarkable clarity.

Scene: College canteen. Late afternoon. Tiny, near empty tumblers of coffee on a liberally stained table. A bunch of tired classmates staring vacantly at nothing. One girl (Puri) fiddling around with plastic dagger.

Puri suddenly decides to liven things up. Pounces on utterly unprepared boy, Kiran

Puri brandishing knife: "I'll kill you!! Tishoom Tishoom! Pish-kkaaw!"

Kiran is jolted out of his post coffee stupour. All are, in fact.

Puri, sobering up and looking around : "Errmm.. I'll kill him... no?"

Chi: "Puri.. thats a knife. When you stab someone with a knife it generally does not go tishoom tishoom or pish-kkaaw!"

Puri: "Oh! Aah.. heheh..! I knew that! Of course.. hehe.. ok I'll go get bajjis.." (runs for cover)


Scene: A few hours later. The same bunch is still in the canteen, showing no signs of leaving. The table has more coffee stains. Silence prevails. Kiran and Lorrein are facing the door, Chi and Puri are facing the balding canteen uncle.

Suddenly, Kiran : "Look! A dead bird!"

Puri,snapping head back to look at the ceiling fan : "Where? Where??"

Silence reigns again. All three stare blankly at Puri, who hasnt a clue why. Slowly it dawns on her..her eyes widen and jaw drops.

Puri : "Oh biiiird! Heheh! Dead one! Of course I knew that.. bird! heheh.. ok coffee anybody.. (runs for cover again)

Its been about 9 years. But this is one memory that refuses to fade.
