Happy New Year!

Its Vishu today. Now that I'm used to celebrating all festivals by myself, I decided to ring in the unofficial ( yes , we have 2) Malayalam New Year in style.

April 14 has to be the only day of the year when I can wake up at the crack of dawn without putting up a fight. The whole idea is to make your way to the prayer room in the dark, with your eyes closed, so that the first thing you see is God smiling serenely at you. Usually the room is decorated with all things yellow- flowers, coins, brass lamps, gold brocade of a Kerala Sari, yellow cucumbers, ripe mangoes. When I was back with my family I used to lie awake all night waiting for my Amma to come softly into my room, wake me up gently and lead me to the puja room with both of our hands covering my eyes. And when I opened my eyes, I was greeted with a sight that took my breath away. Every time. The whole room would be literally ablaze with a golden glow from the brass lamps and all the yellow paraphernalia.

Me, I decorated my prayer room in Bangalore with Christmas decoration flicked after the office party! Woke up at five, groped my way to the kitchen, banged my forehead HARD on the half open bed room door, burnt my fingers badly trying to light the lamp with my eyes closed. But still managed to begin this year with a Vishu Kanni.

Man I'm feeling goooood!! :)

I like the ...'Amma to come softly into my room, wake me up gently and lead me to the puja room with both of our hands covering my eyes. And when I opened my eyes, I was greeted with a sight that took my breath away. Every time...' part. Sounds straight out of an ethereal fiction :-)

My Vishu in Badgaon was completely makeshift as well. Managed a coconut though, and some yellow flowers. No Vilakku so lit a candle with a lighter.

Thanks for stopping by the blog.
